Maimouna is from the area of Fula Bantang in The Gambia. She graduated from high school in 2009 and was teaching without a degree last year. She was a good teacher (100% of her students passed their exams!) but had no chance to go for further studies without help. "Unqualified" teachers only make $65 per MONTH in The Gambia, and the government is trying to get them all replaced, so she asked for the opportunity to go to the capital and attend college. www.gambiarising.org

Mariama is a proud 10th grader at Armitage Sr. Secondary School in Janjanbureh, The Gambia. She asked GambiaRising for support when her mother decided to marry her off at age 15 to an older, "rich" man. With our support, she finished 9th grade at St. Therese's in Fula Bantang, near the top of her class and was admitted to the boarding school at Armitage, which is reserved for top students. www.gambiarising.org

Kadijatou is in her second year at Armitage Sr. Secondary School (grade 11) in Janjanbureh. The school is not free, and it too far from her home to be able to attend without boarding, but with the generous support of a GambiaRising donor. She is working hard and going further than anyone in her family ever has. www.gambiarising.org

In February 2011, I took the trip of a lifetime. Without a doubt, I had the most amazing time in The Gambia. It was one of the most welcoming countries I have ever been in. The scenery was amazing, the people were so friendly and everyone I went with had a great time. I will never forget my week there.
